Language Needs and SEND

Welcome

This session will cover a comprehensive range of insights when working with ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) and SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) learners and investigate various resources and pedagogies to help them acquire underpinning and problem solving skills for Functional Skills Maths.

Session outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse language barriers to learning Functional Maths
  • Consider strategies for supporting language needs
  • Consider strategies for supporting learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
  • Explore the impact of specific learning difficulties on Maths learning, particularly dyslexia

Activities to prepare before session 6

    1. Familiarise yourself with the specific subject content (FS new specs) on measure, shape and space.  Note down key differences as you move from E1 to L2
